STUDENT EMPLOYMENT GUIDE 2008-2009

Using JobX

The Smith College Student Employment Office (SEO) uses a web service called JobX to help students in the job search and application process. It also aids employers by allowing them to post jobs to the web themselves, accept online applications, and hire on-line by checking students' work-study status, etc.

With this tool, students are be able to:

* Search for jobs using any number of different criteria.
* Receive automated email when preferred jobs become available (JobMail).
* Review a history of the college's student employment needs
* Apply for jobs online.
* Complete hiring without paperwork
(although Off-Campus Work-Study & America Reads which requires an additional contract)

You do not need to establish a user account to use JobX. To begin, type the following address into your Internet browser's address bar. http://studentemployment.smith.edu

The home page of the Student Employment Web site is designed for both students and employers. Features accessible from the home page include:

Find a job - Use a number of different tools to browse all available job offerings.

Signup for JobMail - Sign up to receive email automatically once new jobs are posted on the Web site that match your criteria.

Recently Posted Jobs - View the details of the three most recently posted jobs by clicking their job titles. You can apply online, too.

Job Planner - Browse lists of jobs that historically have been offered by various departments. This can give you ideas for jobs that may become available in the future.

Do I Have Work-Study? - Check on your work-study award through Smith's BannerWeb

Find A Job

Every job posted on the student employment Web site can be found and most can be applied for through the Find a Job page.

Point your browser to http://studentemployment.smith.edu

Click Find a Job from the left-side navigation bar or right side of the page.

Find a job by searching and browsing through available jobs. The student employment office has set up Quick Searches for the most common criteria used in searches. You can also be more specific in your job hunt with the Easy and Advanced Searches. To find out how many total jobs are presently available, check the Data Bank at the bottom of the screen:

Click the job title of any job to find out more detail. Before you can view the job's details, however, you must agree to the disclaimer regarding your work-study status. You will only have to agree to this disclaimer once per session. The following screen will then load:

NOTE: Off-Campus Work-Study jobs will display initially without some of their detail. To view the detail of an off-campus job, enter your name and e-mail address just below the posting. America Reads/Counts Jobs are on their own separate listing. Federal Work-Study is required to apply for these jobs. This information will be held as confidential by Student Financial Services and is used for Federal Reporting Statistics.

To apply for the job, click the link at the top of the job listing. You will not be able to apply for off-campus jobs online. You must contact those employers directly.

Complete the form and then click Submit Application when you are finished. You will not have a chance to review this application once you click submit, so be sure your information is correct.

This form may ask different questions depending on the department that is posting the job. If you leave questions blank that are required to be answered, the system will not allow you to submit your application.

Once you click Submit Application, the employer will receive an automated e-mail informing them of your application. Employers will be receiving many applications, so please do not expect an immediate reply. Employers will most likely contact you by email at the address you designate on your application. If you do not hear from the employer, contact them rather than the Student Employment Coordinator. They are required to take their job down off the site if they've filled the position so if you come across an advertised job that has already been filled, tell the supervisor the job should be removed.

You have completed the job application process!
