All students working or wishing to work must read the Student Employment Guide for Students
in entirety to familiarize themselves with the current policies and procedures and the JobX website. You are expected to be familiar with college
policies and procedures as a student employee. Please feel free to write studemp@smith.edu with any questions or if you need clarification.
Jobs are currently open ONLY to students who have been awarded Work-Study for 2012-2013.
There are two types of Work-Study; CWORK is Campus Work-Study, meaning you can only work
on-campus (IWORK for international students), and FWS, which is Federal Work-Study and can be used to do federally funded work off-campus
at an America Reads Tutoring job or OCWS. Check your BannerWeb financial aid award for specifics on what kind of Work-Study you have.
Non-aid students will be able to
apply for jobs on JOBX after October 1 and two weeks after the start of classes in the spring.
Non-aid students who obtained jobs last year are also not automatically eligible to keep them and the jobs must be re-advertised for
students on aid.
The maximum number of hours for any student, on aid or not, is 12 hours a week or one
'full-time' position. First Years work a maximum of 10 hours per week. NOTE: Work during breaks and Spot Job work count against your work-study allotment. The only time earnings are exempt is
during J-Term. Students receiving a stipend for positions such as STRIDE, HCA, etc. are not
eligible for a second job. This policy attempts to offer all students an equal opportunity to work, especially in these difficult economic times. The base
pay rate for 2012-2013 is $8.50 an hour. Off-Campus Work-Study and America Reads pays $9.00, but upperclass students are limited to 10 hours a week
instead of 12 because of the higher rate which brings you to your earnings limit sooner. The same applies to any job that pays a higher
rate..
The Payroll Office has a new website online dedicated entirely to Student Payroll. That office handles everything
payroll related such as BannerWeb, Direct Deposit, etc.
Entering First Year students are limited to working in their houses
or one nearby for Dining Services and Housekeeping, or for the Smith pre-approved America Reads/America Counts Tutoring schools
and agencies (Federal Work-Study required) and are not eligible for other campus jobs until their sophomore year.
Please link to Work-Study for First Year Students on the right for further
information.
JobX is our web-based method of advertising
student jobs for upperclass students. This program aids Smith College's goal of giving students with Work-Study in their aid packages priority
for all jobs. The college is now offering many students College Work (CWORK)in their aid packages, and because that is campus funding and not
federal, those students will not be able to work at America Reads/America Counts Tutoring or Off-Campus Work-Study. Only those with Federal
Work-Study (FWS) are eligible for such positions. Please check the type of work-study you've been awarded on either your award letter or on
BannerWeb.
Students at Smith have many employment options available to them
on-campus, off-campus at Smith pre-approved non-profit agencies, or tutoring under the America Reads/America
Counts Program. There are also off-campus non-work-study jobs advertised on JOBX such as child care and we're fortunate to have many businesses
close to campus if students need additional earnings.Treat your application to any job seriously and think about visiting the Career Development
Office's webpage for assistance on resume writing. To check if
you have Work-Study in your aid package or to do your Web Time Entry connect to BannerWeb:
Again, the Student Employment Guide is required
reading for all students wishing to work.
