ON-CAMPUS INTERNSHIPS 2004-2005

These internships are funded by the On-Campus Internship Program (OCIP) through an application process by the departments listed below. These positions are not open to entering first year students.

College Policy: NO student, whether on aid or not, is entitled to more than one 'full-time' (maximum of 10 hrs per week) job. Students with internships, STRIDE stipends, housing positions, etc may not also seek a regular campus job. All students, particularly those granted Work-Study, deserve the opportunity to obtain the hours for which they are eligible.

Interns are expected to work 8 hours a week for a total of 28 weeks over the course of the academic year and are paid bi-weekly by voucher submission at a rate of $7.75 (Rate Code 03) per hour in 2004-05. The list below are brief outlines of the internships available and you are encouraged to contact the internship's supervisor for an in-depth description and application.

Internship Title

 

Programs Intern

Internship Description

 

This intern coordinates the Student Recruitment Programs and assists specifically with on-campus events. Her role is vital to the success of the recruitment and yield efforts of the Admission Office. She will serve to organize Smith students to return to their former high schools during vacation as part of the Take Smith Home program. She'll support two Fall Preview programs and assist with postcard writing events and online chats. She will organize and implement a project of her own design and coordinate the Student Activities Fair and other aspects of the spring Open Campus program for admitted students.

Educational/Career Value

 

The intern will learn organizational skills, independence, communication and training skills. She will plan programs, design evaluations, perform statistical work, compile information and write reports; all valuable skills for future employment.

Qualifications

 

Should have an interest in recruitment and marketing and a desire to share her Smith experience with others.

Internship Title

 

Outreach Intern

Internship Description

 

The primary focus of this internship is on the Big Sister/Little Sister program which aims to connect current students with alumnae based on similar interests and goals. She will develop strategic plans for cultivating interest and participation in the program and wil coordinate 2 sign-up events each year. She will do follow-up with the participating students and alumnae and will also serve as an ex-officio member of the AASC Board of Directors.

Educational/Career Value

 

The intern will learn about database administration, event and project management skills, volunteer management skills, organizational and communication skills, strategies for dealing with a variety of people, and how a non-profit organization governed by a volunteer board operates.

Qualifications

 

Applicants must have a positive attittude, be enthusiastic and energetic, and able to work independently.

Internship Title

 

Arts Lounge Intern

Internship Description

 

The intern will assist in development and review of policies and procedures for the arts loung and schedule regular art exhibits for students, faculty and staff artists. She will be the liaison between the artists and the Campus Center and will contact College Relations to arrange for mention of the exhibitions to the local news media. She will inventory the works on display and create a biography of the artist and make a visitor sign in board. She will also be the hostess during the opening reception.

Educational/Career Value

 

She will have the opportunity to enhance her competence in written communications by writing letters to artists, press releases, and development of title boards and artist bios. She will enhance her graphic art skills through creation of exhibiition promotional material. This is a good opportunity to explore arts administration as a potential career.

Marketing Intern

Internship Description

 

The intern will assist staff of Student Activities and the Campus Center in marketing and promoting department services and events. She will work with staff in the cafe, bookstore, and student departments to increase attendance at events and the utilization of services within the campus center. She'll develop posters, flyers, table tents and serve o the Campus Center Activities Board.

Educational/Career Value

 

She will develop her written communication and graphic art and computer skills by her work on promotional materials. She will have the opportunity to strengthen her understanding of marketing as a tool within a complex environment.

Business Operations Intern

Internship Description

 

The intern will receive instruction in the overall aspects of several areas of business operations within the college and receive hands-on experience. The areas include: disbursements and Purchasing, Payroll, General Accounting/Gifts/Investment Accounting and Cash Management. She will have sessions with the Director of Investments, the Budget Director, the Controller and the Purchasing Manager.

Educational/Career Value

 

This internship gives the student a unique opportunity to obtain practical experience in business policies and procedures at a college.

Corporate, Foundation & Government Relations Intern

Internship Description

 

This internship provides in-depth exposure to Smith's grant-seeking, faculty research and community partnerships based in the Office of Corporate, Foundation and Government Relations. The intern will develop and report on projects and grants, interact with funders, faculty, administrators, and community organizations.

Educational/Career Value

 

The intern has the oportunity to develop grant seeking and grant writing skills and see the relationships between higher education and society. It is excellent experience for preparation for non-profit and public sector careers. It provides skills for the workplace and valuable skills to assist students in their own research, professional and community service efforts.

Qualifications

 

Diplomatic and discreet, able to work with a variety of staff, faculty, administrators, external agencies and alumnae.

Internship Title

 

Spatial Analysis Lab Intern

Internship Description

 

The intern will serve as an assistant to the GIS Specialist and provide additional support to users of the SAL. She will assist in data documentation, customizing software products, web page maintenance and development, data collection with GPS, assist faculty and students, and attend steering committee meetings.

Educational/Career Value

 

She will learn how GIS technology is employed in a wide variety of academic pursuits and about community based applications that are exploting the power and efficiency of GIS and GPS technologies. This a unique opportunity to work on such projects in one of the hottest and fastest growing fields of technologies.

Qualifications

 

Good planning skills, computer and data organization skills as well as web skills. Good attention to detail and a sense of humor. Experience with GIS, web page design, HTML, VB, BVA, Access, Excel helpful but not required.

Internship Title

 

EVS & P Intern

Internship Description

 

This is a fairly new, rapidly growing and highly visible program at Smith and the intern will assist the Program Coordinator in administering the program. She will lend a student perspective to the program and bring issues to the fore that students find important. She will perform various tasks such as aiding in the organization of various meetings and assist with the EVS & P News as well as the website. She will also work on database files and work with materials in the Resource Center and bulletin boards as well as producing and distributing announcements for program events.

Educational/Career Value

 

The student may pursue an environmental issue of interest to her and attend a conference as a Smith EVS & P representative. She will be exposed to various student groups, faculty and environmental professionals.

Qualifications

 

Strong background and/or interest in environmental issues; excellent organizational, writing and computer skills; detail-oriented; able to work independently, a working knowledge of database programs such as Access and Excel, desktop publishing and website maintenance.

Campus Connections Intern

Internship Description

 

This intern will work with the Health Rep Board and health educator to help design and coordinate several health promotion projects with a major emphasis on outreach to Smith cultural organizations. She will help to continue to make Health Services welcoming to all studens in the Smith community.

Educational/Career Value

 

The intern will develop her listening, communication and leadershp skills and will increase her awareness of the value of the differences and needs of others. She will learn to work collaboratively on projects and about health issues relevant to traditional age college studetns (including the political aspects).

Internship Title

 

Environmental Health & Safety Intern

Internship Description

 

The intern will perform some tasks focussing on new regulations and "best practices" regarding the security of hazardous materials. She will assist in continuing implementatin of the OSHA Laboratory Standard by helping with laboratory inspections, helping develop check-lists, and reviewing the Chemical Hygiene Plan against those of peer institutions.

Educational/Career Value

 

The intern wouldlearn about certain aspects of toxicology at a graduate level and how federal regulations such as EPA and NIH are implemented in a research setting, as well as basic principals of industrial hygiene.

Qualifications

 

Should have a high level of scientific expertise. Internet expertise needed. Best fit would be a science major or someone who's enjoyed several Chem or Bio courses. Self-motivated.

Internship Title

 

Photography Intern - Libraries

Internship Description

 

The student will scan prints and slides to produce digital images, which she will manipulate in Photoshop to produce high-quality prints or digital files. She will learn the mechanics of copy photography, including how to shoot copy negatives and develop film; print negativesl and shoot color slides. She will be exposed to the issues surrounding the preservation of photographic archives and special collections.

Educational/Career Value

 

This internship would prepare a student for work in institutional collections such as libraries, galleries, historical societies, and private and governmental archives.

Qualifications

 

Prior experience in digital imaging and photographic darkroom work. Should be familiar with Adobe Photoshop.

Meridians Intern

Internship Description

 

Meridians: feminism, race, transnationalism is a peer-reviewed interdisciplinary journal of scholarship and creative by and about women of color and Third World women in national and international contets. The Meridians intern would be responsible for logging manuscripts, processing reviews, sending various forms of correspondence, and interfacing with authors and readers, as well as members of the Meridians local, editorial, and advisory groups. She might man a table a reading or lecture, or research conferences where Meridians could be represented.

Educational/Career Value

 

The student will gain exposure into the world of academic publishing, alog with acquring skills that can translate into any work environment. It provides concrete experience into the actual workings of getting a journal out and exposes her to cutting-edge scholarship and creative work.

Internship Title

 

Curatorial Intern

Internship Description

 

The intern will assist the Associate Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs in organizing and installing two exhibitions on the subject of contemporary print-making: Latin American Graphics: The Evolution from the Mythical to the Personal and Imprint: Celebrating 20 Years of the Smith College Print Workshop. The intern will catalogue works and assist in organzation. She will also be able to organize a small exhibit from the collection on a subject of her own choosing.

Educational/Career Value

 

The intern will give the intern first-hand experience in conceptualizing, organizing, and presenting and exhibit of her hown, from the selection of works to the writing of labels. This is a rare opportunity at the undergraduate level to participate in the preparation and installation of exhibitions at an art museum and learn essential research skills necessary for a career in a museum or academic institution as well as work extensively with original works of art.

Public Relations Intern

Internship Description

 

The intern will help plan, schedule, create, produce and disseminate all publicity for selected Dance, Music, and Theatre performances and public events during the academic year. She'll learn to use Adobe Photoshop and InDesign for graphic design as well as FileMakerPro. She may also assist Box Office workers or help train House Managers for performances.

Educational/Career Value

 

This gives a student hands-on experience in the world of publicity and she'll have the opportunity to work independently on projects. She will develop artistic and marketing intuition and creativity.

Qualifications

 

Creative, good communication, research, and design skills. Organized.
