Someone said you can't teach anyone anything, only get them excited to learn it for themselves. Your creativity, imagination and experience are the most effective tools you have to communicate the joy and wonder reading can bring to our lives. Good Readers are better able to relate books and stories to their lives; they read fluently and make associations within the text and to the people and objects around them, moving beyond simply sounding out the letters and words. To help you build good readers, there are training sessions that Five College America Reads/America Counts Program requires as part of your position. If you have any special needs regarding accessibility please let us know ahead of time so that we may accomodate you. Click on the underlined or highlighted link to proceed to a specific training page. This is a class that lasts an hour and a half and is required for you to complete before you begin tutoring. You will be paid for your time. Training will cover classroom etiquette, your responsibilities as an America Reads/America Counts Tutor, and introduces some tutoring strategies. You may look for a job before completing the overview training, but we encourage you to sign up for training as soon as you're able to attend. Note that you need to complete the Overview Training BEFORE you may began working. The Extended Training Workshop (ETW) This is
an extensive training offered once per semester.
Taught
by faculty from the five colleges and area teachers, ETW equips you as
a tutor with detailed tutoring strategies, ideas for projects and lessons,
a place to meet and share ideas with other tutors, and an opportunity to
ask questions related to the level of students you are tutoring.
The training lasts for one 2 hour session and takes place on the weekend.
As with the Overview Training, you will be paid for your hours.
