Five College America Reads Tutors
College/University Requirements
Each of the Five Colleges has a specific payroll/hiring  process for hiring student employees. (Note: as an America Reads Tutor site, there is no charge to your school/agency for the tutors.) Below are payroll/hiring processes and contacts for each of the Five Colleges' Student Employment/Financial Aid Offices. You may have tutors from different colleges working at your site, and processes for putting them on payroll (and recording their hours) may be different for each of those tutors. All Five College America Reads Tutors must have appropriate campus payroll/hiring paperwork completed before he/she may begin working.

To hire an Amherst College students, the criteria for a site is as follows: 

  • Be an eligible site
  • Agree that it wants to hire a particular student, agree to supervise
  • him/her and sign off on time sheets
  • Sign the work study contract when it receives it from the College and return it to our office in a timely manner (this one seems to be the one they have trouble with)
  • Monitor to see that the student does not exceed the authorized earnings limit

       Once you have selected and hired a Mount Holyoke student, she will contact our Student Employment Office to inform Janice Kane, Administrative Assistant, of her employment. The student will be given a Work Study Agreement Form which you will need to complete verifying her employment with your agency. The student will return this signed form to Janice, and Janice will make the proper arrangements with the payroll office to ensure that the student is paid. 
       The student will go to the Payroll Office to get her time sheets. These are biweekly time sheets for the student to complete, listing her hours worked. The supervisor will be asked to sign it and the student will then submit her hours for payment to the payroll office.

     The student will pick up the America Reads Federal Work-Study Authorization form from Student Employment Services and bring it to you for completion. You will complete and sign the authorization and the student will return it to Student Employment Services along with other hiring documents.
     You will fill out and sign an off-campus authorization and attach a job description and the student will return the paperwork to UMass Student Employment Services.
      Once your paperwork is returned to UMass Student Employment Services and the student has returned other necessary payroll documents, you will be notified that the student may began working under UMass America Reads Federal Work-Study payroll within 2 days. 
      You will be sent time sheets by mail to complete and fax to UMass Student Employment Services on a weekly basis. The specifics of this process will be sent to you with your contract agreement.
