AMERICA READS/AMERICA COUNTS TUTORING

What To Do

If you are interested in an advertised tutoring position, apply for the position directly with the agency or school. A comprehensive list of all schools and agencies seeking tutors is available on the Five College America Reads website at right under Job Listing as a downloadable file. If you know of a program or school that isn't included already in our listings we can certainly arrange for you to work there if they meet the criteria for the program and provide the necessary paperwork.

Students seeking an America Reads/America Counts Tutoring position must have Federal Work-Study in their financial aid package (check your Work-Study status using Banner Web.) If you do not have Federal Work-Study, you are not eligible to apply for or hold a tutoring position unless you choose to do it on a *volunteer* basis. IMPORTANT: America Reads/Counts applicants must contact the Student Employment Coordinator at vschumac@smith.edu for a contract when hired at a school or agency. You will not be hired and cannot be paid without a completed contract. Your earnings will be counted against your work-study. You must also attend a Five College America Reads overview training session (see the Five College site for dates and times). Two training sessions will occur on the Smith campus. One will be Saturday, September 17 at 11 AM in Dewey Common Room and the other will be Thursday, September 22 at 5 PM in Campus Center room 003. You need to register by emailing Robin White at rwhitefi@comdis.umass.edu. You can begin working before you complete the Overview Traning. The site you work at is also responsible for training you specific to their needs

You will have to attend an Overview Training Session, Extended Training Workshop, and a Reflection Session as part of your tutoring duties and you will be paid for this attendance by the Student Employment Coordinator. Information on training, etc. can be found on the Five College America Reads/America Counts website.

E-mail vschumac@smith.edu or pick up a form outside SFS when you are hired as a tutor to obtain the program contract and agreement forms. Under no circumstances should you ever be working in an individual's home. The program is limited to schools and agencies serving children and Smith students with federal work-study.

Please think seriously about your schedule and other obligations before applying for these positions.
