Smith College participates in the national tutoring program called the America Reads * America Counts Challenge, which is designed to employ college students as reading and math tutors for children up to grade 6. Raising the reading levels and math skills of a child through tutoring can significantly increase his or her chances for a successful future. This program allows you to be a part of that transformation.
Cooperatively with the other area colleges, Smith has been reaching out to local schools and agencies to place students in reading and math tutor positions. The five college program has also developed training sessions for those students and has developed a website which lists dozens of tutoring opportunities throughout the Pioneer Valley.
Students seeking an America Reads/America Counts Tutoring position must have Federal Work-Study in their financial aid package (check your Work-Study status using Banner Web.) If you do not have Federal Work-Study, you are not eligible to apply for or hold a tutoring position unless you choose to do it on a *volunteer* basis. IMPORTANT: America Reads/Counts applicants must contact the Student Employment Coordinator at vschumac@smith.edu for a contract when hired at a school or agency. You cannot be paid without a completed contract.
