WORK-STUDY FOR ADA COMSTOCK SCHOLARS

Your Work-Study Opportunity

Your official financial aid award letter offers you an opportunity to earn money at an on-campus work-study job. Students are not required to work if they do not wish to do so. However, the College will not replace the unearned work-study with grant aid.

Obtaining Hours

Although you are offered the opportunity to earn through work-study, you are responsible for obtaining the number of hours you need.  Jobs are not guaranteed or reserved.  Financial aid students with Work-Study have priority for all jobs. A full range of job listings can be found on JobX.

You may also choose to work fewer than the 12 hours you’re eligible for per week, or to find a job sometime later in the year. Although the academic program at Smith is rigorous, working 12 hrs or less per week is very manageable.

The Student Employment web page offers all job listings for Work-Study students and also provides a great deal of information regarding student work, on and off campus.

If you have Federal Work-Study you may wish to consider Off-Campus Work-Study at one of the local non-profits or the America Reads/America Counts Tutoring Program, both of which allow you to get off campus and into the community.  These jobs allow you to be paid 50 cents more per hour than the campus rate for what is, in essence, community service work.  They provide excellent opportunities not available on campus.  Smith College funds work at agencies whose services range from family planning to the arts.

If you are commuting to Smith you can essentially take your Work-Study home with you by working as an America Reads Tutor in your own community schools.  An arrangement such as this allows you much more freedom in earning your Work-Study since you do not have to be on campus to do it.

Information on these programs and job listings are available on the website and at the Student Financial Services Office in College Hall. You do not need to apply for a Work-Study job until you arrive on campus. There will be plenty of positions available at that time. At that time you may log onto our student work-study job listings at JobX to look for and apply for positions.

Assistance is available from the Student Employment Coordinator if any student has difficulty locating work due to medical restrictions or a class or athletic conflict.

Payment Details

Before you can be paid, the Payroll Office will require you to fill out a W4 Employee’s Withholding  Allowance Certificate (required by the IRS, an M-4, and an I-9 INS Employment Verification form.  Upon your arrival at Central Check-In you should be prepared to complete these documents.

Arrangements can be made to direct all or part of your paycheck to your tuition account.  The Payroll Office processes the student payroll and any questions should be directed there. Direct deposit to a bank account can be arranged with the Payroll Office as well.
