The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans are for up to two years graduate study in the professions and academic disciplines at any institution of higher learning in the United States. The Fellowships are funded by a trust established by Paul and Daisy Soros and were created in recognition of the contributions of New Americans to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded to the donors and their families.

In order to qualify, a candidate must:

  • Be a Green Card holder, a naturalized US citizen, or the child of naturalized parents.
  • Be no older than 30 years of age as of November 1 of application year.
  • Demonstrate the relevance of graduate study to their long-term career goals and potential to contribute to society.
  • Give evidence of at least two of the following three attributes:
    1. Creativity, originality, and initiative, demonstrated in
    2. A capacity for accomplishment, demonstrated through activity that has required sustained effort and drive; and
    3. A commitment to the values expressed in the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Thirty fellowships are awarded each year; for the 2003 competition there were nearly 1100 applications. A Fellow receives a maintenance grant of $20,000 per year, as well as a tuition grant of one-half the cost of tuition. The application deadline usually falls in early November.
