The Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program is Ambassadorial Scholarships, established in 1947. Since that time, more than 30,000 men and women from 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today, the Ambassadorial Scholarships Program of The Rotary Foundation is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program.

These scholarships are for studies in countries chosen by the applicants, approved by the Rotary Foundation. Applicants must live, study or work in whatever town or area they are applying in, and must have completed at least two years of college course work. Rotarians and their family members are not eligible. Transportation, tuition, fees, room & board (maximum of $26,000) are covered.

Full academic year scholarships are available.

Selected students serve as ambassadors of goodwill throughout the world. Ambassadors help Rotary increase awareness of and respect for the cultural differences while living and studying in another country and support Rotary's mission of international understanding.

Anecdotes

"I'd look at a Rotary Ambassadorial if she is poised and personable, although it is sort of a pain for a senior--we put our juniors in the competition because it takes Rotary so long (more than a year) after the deadline." College advisor quote.

Evangeline Heiliger, Class of 2000, awarded Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship in August of 1999:
Spent 2001 award year in New Zealand, studying at Victoria University of Wellington as a member of the Women's Studies postgraduate program, conducting independent research, tutoing and lecturing. Led two research projects for the National office of the New Zealand Family Planning Association. Completed BA Honours degree with First Class Honours in Dec 2001. Spoke at more than 20 Rotary clubs about vasectomy and/or feminist theory to 50-something men at each!
