Introduction
The 2004–05 DAAD
panel of experts in higher education selected 56 undergraduate
students from 294 applicants (19%) at 46 Canadian and US universities
to receive the prestigious EDU.de scholarship to study in
Germany.
The German Academic Exchange
Service (DAAD, by its German acronym) is the largest international
exchange organization in the world, supporting nearly 75,000
people each year. It is a private, publicly funded organization
of higher education institutions in Germany.
Since many of the traditional
transatlantic scholarship programs in higher education are
aimed at graduate students, DAAD wanted to offer opportunities
for undergraduate students and launched the EDU.de Program
in 2000.
EDU.de is aimed at students
who want to spend part of their third or fourth year of college
in Germany. The grantees stay anywhere from a semester to
a full academic year, either to study, for internships, or
senior thesis research.
