Bite-sized Descriptions of Most of the Fellowships Offered Through Smith

  • The $32,000 BEINECKE SCHOLARSHIP is for courageous selection of graduate studies in the arts, humanities or social sciences anywhere in the world by undergraduates depending on grants. Smith is allowed one nominee. JUNIORS APPLY: begin prior AY spring.

  • The up to $20,000 BOREN UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP is for STUDY ABROAD preferably for a year otherwise a semester. Offered by the National Security Education Program, it seeks to increase knowledge of lesser-known parts of the globe to secure the political and economic position of the U.S. in the world. It is for study of specific subjects and languages in specific regions. Underclasswomen can win again as upperclasswomen. Smith evaluation required. Usually SOPHOMORES APPLY for Junior Year Abroad but first-years and juniors can apply too for the following academic year.

  • The DAAD German Academic Exchange Service is for study in GERMANY for a year. All costs covered. Command of German and Smith evaluation required. Begin application SPRING JUNIOR YEAR. More information about this fellowship should be sought from dandrew@email.smith.edu.

  • The up to $7500 DAAD UNDERGRADUATE German Academic Exchange Service is for JUNIOR YEAR ABROAD in GERMANY for an academic year. To be used ONLY in conjunction with Smith’s JYA Hamburg program. German language competency is desirable, but not mandatory. International students from Smith may apply. Register in FALL SOPHOMORE YEAR.

  • The FULBRIGHT STUDENT GRANT is for a year of study, research &/or a project in MOST PARTICIPATING COUNTRIES, and teaching in some. Language requirement. All costs covered. Smith evaluation required. About 900 Americans go to 140 countries a year. Begin application in SPRING JUNIOR YEAR.

  • The GATES SCHOLARSHIP is to CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY and the most purely academic of all the fellowships. Brilliance and/or scholarly devotion to a field is sought. Rugged intellectual individuality a plus. Up to 80 Americans elected each year. All costs covered. Deadline end-October. Other nationals can also apply and Smith will support your applications (see International Students). Begin application in SPRING JUNIOR YEAR.

  • The up to $15,000 KILLAM FELLOWSHIP is for JUNIOR YEAR ABROAD preferably for a year otherwise a semester at a choice of 10 universities in CANADA. Might be particularly appropriate for students in the sciences since major Canadian schools typically have world-class research institutions. Deadline is around the end of February. Begin application FALL SOPHOMORE YEAR.

  • The LUCE SCHOLARS PROGRAM is for a year’s INTERNSHIP in one of 12 East and Southeast ASIAN countries for 18 students who have NOT concentrated on Asian studies, including Asian languages! Smith can nominate up to two candidates. Deadline is before Thanksgiving. SENIORS APPLY beginning in JUNIOR YEAR

  • The $28,000 MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP is for study at a BRITISH UNIVERSITY, including Oxford and Cambridge. GPA of 3.7 and Smith endorsement required. Begin application in SPRING JUNIOR YEAR.

  • The MELLON FELLOWSHIP is for those committed to a decades-long career in TEACHING, research and/or scholarship, who are applying to DOCTORAL programs in the HUMANITIES. Covers all costs of the first year of a graduate program. Minorities especially encouraged to apply. SENIORS APPLY beginning in SPRING JUNIOR YEAR.

  • The MITCHELL SCHOLARSHIP covers all costs for study at a UNIVERSITY in IRELAND or NORTHERN IRELAND. Smith endorsement required. Final campus deadline end-September. Begin applications in SPRING JUNIOR YEAR.

  • The RHODES SCHOLARSHIP is to OXFORD UNIVERSITY. About 32 awards a year covering all costs. Smith endorsement required. Final campus deadline end-September. Begin application in SPRING JUNIOR YEAR. Some British Commonwealth and German students can apply in their home countries (see International Students).

  • The TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIP is for those with a 3.6/+ GPA interested in a career in PUBLIC SERVICE, in the broadest sense. Up to 80 awards of up to $26,000. Smith may nominate up to four juniors. Final campus deadline mid-December. An excellent fellowship: JUNIORS urged to APPLY but begin as an early Spring Sophomore.

  • The UDALL SCHOLARSHIP is for those with the commitment and potential to preserve and improve the ENVIRONMENT. Smith may nominate up to six applicants. Sophomores may win again as juniors. 75 nominees awarded $5000 for junior or senior year. SOPHOMORES & JUNIORS APPLY. Begin spring semester. The Udall Scholarship for NATIVE AMERICANS and ALASKAN NATIVES is for sophomores and juniors studying in fields related to health care and tribal policy.
