The late Henry R. Luce, co-founder and editor-in-chief of
Time Inc., established in 1936 the Henry Luce Foundation,
administrators of the Luce Scholars Program.
One year of work in East and Southeast Asia for 18 young
U.S. citizens to increase awareness of Asia among future leaders
in American society
- Graduating seniors with bachelor degree when program begins
late August or alumnae or graduate students all under 30
years old on September 1 of year program begins. Minimum
3.6 GPA.
- Focused career course. Motivated to accomplish in chosen
field. Outstanding academic achievement in field. Remarkable
leadership capacity. Particularly open-minded and considerate.
- Smith is one of 67 affiliated colleges entitled to nominate
candidates, the number of nominees dictated by previous
years’ participation. Currently Smith is entitled to TWO
nominees. The odds of being named a Luce Scholar are estimated
at about 10 to 12 percent.
Luce Foundation pays a monthly allowance and costs enabling
performance of the program operating in 12 countries: Brunei,
China and Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia,
Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and
Vietnam. Direct applications from students not accepted. Must
apply for nomination through Smith College Fellowships Office.
Not open to those with significant Asian experience or a
concentration in Asian Studies or Languages.
The most advantageous time to register for a fellowship
is in the spring, starting mid February. Statistics show that
those who register earlier fare far better. The deadline to
register for the Luce is the end of September. Petitions to
register later may be considered from students who show exceptional
promise to be successful in fellowships competitions.
