The Newton Fellowship focuses on the shortage of adequately
qualified mathematics teachers in our nation's public high
schools. The Newton Fellowship Program trains mathematically-talented
individuals to become high school math teachers and supports
them in the early years of their careers. The program currently
operates in New York City and is endorsed by the New York
City Department of Education. Math for America expects to
expand the program to other cities in the future.
Newton Fellows receive an aggregate stipend of $90,000 over
five years and obtain a full tuition scholarship to a master's
level teacher preparation program at Teachers College (Columbia
University), New York University, or Bard College. They also
will earn theirNew York State Teaching Certification and achieve
a position as a high school math teacher in New York City.
