Thinking about studying abroad in Asia?
American students increasingly are choosing to study abroad during their college
careers. But, the number of students heading to Asia has not kept pace with those
departing for the rest of the world.
The majority of American students who study abroad go to the United Kingdom, Spain,
Italy, France or Germany. According to Open Doors, the annual survey of international
student mobility conducted by the Institute of International Education (IIE), over 60%
of all U.S. students studying abroad go to Europe, while only about 6% study in East
and Southeast Asia.
The primary goal of Freeman-ASIA is to increase the number of American undergraduate
students who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing
them with the information and financial assistance they will
need.
Students may apply to both Freeman-ASIA and the Gilman
International Scholarship Program, and in most cases they
may accept both awards. It is only in cases where the student's
need is completely covered by one scholarship that the student
may only accept one.
