The American Graduate Fellowships are intended to promote and support doctoral study in the humanities by accomplished graduates of small and mid-sized private liberal arts colleges. The fellowships will be awarded annually through 2011. They are available to students from eligible institutions (of which Smith is one) who enroll in doctoral programs at any of 23 leading independent research universities in the United States, Great Britain, and Ireland. Eligible fields of study include history, philosophy, literature and languages, and fine arts.

The American Graduate Fellowships program is competitive, with only two fellowships offered and twelve finalists from a pool of over 60 well-qualified applicants. Up to $50,000 is awarded for each American Graduate Fellow during his or her initial year of graduate study, including tuition, fees, and a stipend for living expenses and research costs. Fellows attending universities in Great Britain or Ireland may also apply a portion of their awards to international travel. All awards will be paid directly to the graduate institutions, with the exception of travel support. Fellowships will normally be renewable for a second academic year (in the same field of study at the same university), on the condition of satisfactory performance during the first year.

Applicants must be graduating seniors of an eligible undergraduate institution. Preference will be given to applicants from institutions that enroll fewer than 3,000 undergraduates. Applications are due mid-October. The first awards will be made in January for graduate study beginning in the fall.

Detailed information about the fellowships, including applicant criteria, eligible fields of study, and eligible graduate institutions, is available at the American Graduate Fellowships website at www.cic.edu/projects_services/grants/americangrad.asp .
