Introduction
Some fellowships emphasize scholarship and are more strictly
academic (e.g. Beinecke, Daad), some emphasize leadership
upon an excellent academic base (e.g. Luce, Marshall, Mitchell,
Rhodes, Truman) and some seek enterprise, originality, pioneers,
advocates (Boren, Fulbright) combined with very strong scholarship
(Gates).
All fellowships whether they seek future scholars or leaders, want to invest in those who will give back to society to improve the world, who have the wherewithal to make a difference, the talent and drive to be a change agent. You don’t have to be the SGA president or volunteer hours each week in a soup kitchen, but you do need to be a highly active and effective person who takes initiative and gets positive results in any area, usually multiple areas, of endeavor.
