CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS, IL
Chicago Public Schools hosts the 2009 National Chinese Language Conference at the Marriott Magnificent Mile Downtown Hotel, Thu, Apr 30 − Sat, May 2. The conference theme is “Making Connections, Building Partnerships.” Focus is on expanding support for Chinese education and to promote global understanding and skills among U.S. students. The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia hosts an exhibit booth in the Chicago Marriott Downtown Hotel. In addition, NCTA personnel present during the Teaching Culture across the Curriculum panel. The Five College Center for East Asian Studies is conducting a bus trip to New York City entitled From the Museum to the Classroom, on Sat, Apr 4. The program, open to present and past FCCEAS/NCTA seminar participants and their colleagues, includes docent-led tours of exhibitions at the Asia Society Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Post-Mao Dreaming: Chinese Contemporary Art is at the Smith College Museum of Art (SCMA) through Sun, May 31. CHINESE PERFORMING ARTS, MA
The Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts presents Meng-Chieh Liu, piano on Sat, Mar 21, 8pm, in Jordan Hall, Boston. Meng-Chieh Liu (The Curtis Institute of Music) performs the Schubert Sonata. WESLEYAN U, MIDDLETOWN, CT
China-Balancing the Changes is on view at the Mansfield Freeman Center for East Asian Studies, 343 Washington Ter, Wed, Apr 1 − Sun, May 24. These photographs by Sharon Crain present the changes (such as blue padded suits to high fashion and clay stove noodle shops to stainless steel grilled western fast food) she witnessed in China since her first visit in 1977. A gallery talk with Center Curator Patrick Dowdey and Sharon Crain takes place at noon on Wed, Apr 1.
            A Chinese music concert is held on Sun, Apr 26, 7pm, in the World Music Hall. Hearing China is a performance presenting diverse styles of Chinese classical and contemporary music by the Wesleyan Chinese Music Ensemble.
A performance of Korean Drumming is held in the World Music Hall on Sun, May 10, 7pm. It is performed with several different kinds of drums.

RISD MUSEUM, PROVIDENCE, RI
The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum of Art presents Shih Chieh Huang / Connected: Eject before disconnecting through Sun, Jun 21. BOWDOIN COLLEGE, BRUNSWICK, ME

PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM, SALEM, MA
Mahjong: Contemporary Chinese Art from the Sigg Collection is on view at the Peabody Essex Museum through Sun, May 17. The exhibition features approximately 100 works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs from the last four decades.
Auspicious Wishes and Natural Beauty in Korean Art is housed in the newly redesigned and reinstalled Yu Kil-Chun Gallery. This exhibition focuses on the use of symbols and natural materials in Korean aesthetic tradition.
Perfect Imbalance, Exploring Chinese Aesthetics is still at PEM and continues through Fri, Jan 1, 2010. It consists of 30 objects from the Neolithic era to 2004, including paintings, jade, textiles, porcelain, and prints.

Liu Zheng: The Chinese is showing at the Williams College Museum of Art, 15 Lawrence Hall Dr, through Sun, Apr 26. MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BOSTON, MA
Gentlemen of Suzhou is on view at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston, 465 Huntington Ave, through Sun, Jul 12. METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART, NYC
Art of the Korean Renaissance, 1400−1600 is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd St, through Sun, Jun 21.This international loan exhibition includes 50 works of art from the first 200 years of the Choson dynasty.
            Arts of the Ming Dynasty: China’s Age of Brilliance is at the Museum through Sun, Sep 13. This exhibition presents the diversity of art created under China’s Ming dynasty (1368−1644). It includes paintings, calligraphies, textiles, ceramics, lacquers, cloisonné, jades, and bamboo carvings.

KOREA SOCIETY, NYC
The Korea Society presents the traditional and contemporary arts of Korea through its traveling exhibitions and performing arts programs. Gods, Demons, and Generals: Icons of Korean Shamanism, Living Through the Forgotten War: Portrait of Korea, and Korean Comics: A Society Through Small Frames are among the 10 exhibitions available for travel to institutions in North America. ASIA SOCIETY, NYC
Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove is on view at the Asia Society, 725 Park Ave, through Sun, Apr 26. The exhibition examines the 3rd century group of Chinese learned men who have been the subject of ink painting and decorative arts in East Asia.
Yang Fudong: Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest is showing, through Sun, Sep 13. This is the first U.S. museum presentation of the complete 5-part cinematic masterpiece by Shanghai-based artist Yang Fudong.

Chinese Culture Weekend is a program for families interested in learning more about Chinese culture. It is conducted by Common Ground Center, 473 Tatro Rd, Starksboro, Fri, Jul 17 − Sun, Jul 19. THE LAURASIAN INSTITUTION
The C-corps, Jr. Program is an academic year high school exchange program. The Laurasian Institution (TLI) selects Chinese high school students who are interested in learning about the U.S. and eager to share the Chinese language and culture with others. CAFA INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS
The China Central Academy of Fine Art (CAFA) and the Teachers College Columbia University offer a Summer Studio Art Program with a focus on Digital Media in Beijing, China, for college students and faculty. The 2009 program has 2 sessions on “Video, Art, and Chinese Language.”

Classes are taught in English. The program provides a venue for students to develop their art, learn beginning Chinese through classes that are part of the program, and gain an understanding of current and historical Chinese art. MUSIC FESTIVAL AT WALNUT HILL, MA
The 18th Annual Music Festival at Walnut Hill is held at the Walnut Hill School, 12 Highland St, in Natick, near Boston, Fri, Jul 31 − Fri, Aug 21. Total enrollment is 35 students, ages 14 and above. Application deadline is Wed, Apr 1. The program includes 2- 3 private lessons per week for a variety of instruments, and for voice. ASIAN CULTURAL CENTER, BRATTLEBORO, VT
The Asian Cultural Center of Vermont offers classes in Chinese language and culture, painting, and calligraphy for children and adults, as well as T’ai chi for health workshops.

--> The 18th Annual All-American Youth Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy Competition is divided into 4 age groups: age 9 and under, 10 to 13, 14 to 17, and 18 to 21. RESOURCES

 

The Indiana University East Asian Studies Center has a new lesson plan on Tibet and China that is available at www.iu.edu/~easc/outreach/eductors/lessonplan.shtml. The lesson plan was developed by a curriculum specialist and a China specialist.

The University of Vermont Asian Studies Outreach Program now owns two, 40-foot-long Chinese Dragon puppets. Teachers or schools in Vermont can borrow these puppets to use for any occasion at school.
