About Five College Center for East Asian Studies
The Five College Center for East Asian Studies is one of many programs administered by Five Colleges, Incorporated. The member institutions of the consortium are: Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. East Asian studies at the five institutions involve a wide range of departments and program structures: three nations—China, Japan, Korea; many disciplines—languages and other humanities and social sciences and geography; and professional schools.
The Center's programs are currently funded by grants from the Freeman Foundation, the United States-Japan Foundation, the American Institute for Foreign Study Foundation, and the Massachusetts Geographic Alliance. A gift from Konica Minolta Colorful Tomorrow Foundation helps to support our Japan-related projects, and Kasumi Kaikan Foundation of Japan has contributed books, videos, maps, slide sets, and calligraphy kits. The Center very much appreciates the support of these institutions.
Lending Library
The Center maintains a Resource Library of curricular materials on China, Japan, and Korea. The curriculum units, videos, DVDs, recordings, slides, kits, posters, books, etc. are listed in our online catalogue. These materials can be borrowed by teachers who are participating in the Center's current NCTA seminar program.
Newsletter
The Center publishes East Asia for Teachers in three editions (fall, winter, and spring). Each issue provides information about East Asia-related events, study and travel opportunities for teachers and their students, and educational resources.
Seminars, Conferences, Workshops, and Institutes
The Center conducts institutes, seminars, and workshops for teachers throughout New England and upstate New York. Audiences include elementary, middle, and high school teachers, faculty of two-year colleges, museum educators, and media specialists.
