Lighting
Adequate lighting is essential for working effectively and preventing eye strain. Try the following techniques to improve your lighting conditions:
- Use recessed, indirect, baffled, or diffused lighting where possible.
- Keep in mind that different tasks require different illumination, and that you might need more light for reading a document than for working on the computer.
- Consider using a desk lamp to illuminate copy. Be sure the lamp does not relect onto the screen.
- Place any interior light source beside or behind you to eliminate shadows on your work.
- Check whether the brightness of ceiling lights can be reduced. This may require partial lamp removal.
- Lower lighting levels in the immediate area of your monitor.
- Use blinds, shades, and draperies to control window light.
- Reduce the glare from your screen by moving the monitor and adjusting window shades, blinds, or curtains.
- Place the monitor at a right angle to a window wall, if possible.
- Clean your computer screen regularly. Use a soft cloth or tissue moistened with glass cleaner or water to clean your monitor.
- Adjust the brightness and contrast on your computer to a level that makes your eyes feel comfortable.
