Elizabeth Babcock Poetry Prize, awarded for the best poem by an undergraduate. Competition is not open to those who have already won the prize, nor may the poem have been printed previously. -- Georgia Pearle, AC '09, "Lil' Allen"

Ethel Olin Corbin Prize, awarded for the best original poem (preferably blank verse, sonnet or ballad) or informal essay by an undergraduate. -- Elizabeth M. Pusack, '09, "How To: In Hot Pursuit of Thumping Pattrnwyrms"

Ruth Forbes Eliot Prize, awarded for the best poem submitted by a first-year or sophomore. -- Sarah A. Green, '11, "Mona Lisa"

Rosemary Thomas Poetry Prize, awarded for the best poem or group of poems. -- Laurie Guerrero-Garcés, AC 08, "Esperanza Tells Her Friends the Story of La Llorona and Other Poems" and Kimberley Ann Rogers, AC '08, "Into the Wild Vermillion and Other Poems"

Elizabeth Drew Fiction Prize, awarded for the best fiction written by an undergraduate. -- Rachel E. Love, '09, 'Mexico"

Elizabeth Drew Essay Prize, awarded for the best classroom essay on a literary subject submitted by an undergraduate to a class taught by a member of the English department. -- Melina A. Moore, '09, "Torn Asunder: The Notion of Hell and Damnation in the B-Text of Doctor Faustus, "Elizabeth M. Pusack, '09, "The Inevitable Consummation: Destiny-Defiance vs. Driving Desire in George Sluizer's The Vanishing," Kimberly E. Meskimen, '08, "Fallen Reflections: Adam and Satan's Soliloquies," and Emily S. Cordes, '09, "A Fresh Green Breast of a Flawed Girl: Deconstructin Gatsby's Pastoral Dream."

Elizabeth Drew Memorial Prizes, awarded for (a) the best honors thesis in English, and (b) the best essay on a literary subject submitted by a first-year -- (a) no award this year;  (b) Rachel A. Starr, '11, "Sacred Sensuality in John Donne's 'The Canonization'"

Eleanor Cederstrom Prize, awarded for the best poem by an undergraduate, written in a traditional verse form. -- Dana L. Kuttler, '08, "Villanelle For Paps"

Helen Kate Furness Prize, awarded for the best essay on a Shakespearean theme prepared in courses or seminars and recommended by the instructors of such courses or seminars. James T. and Ellen M. Hatfield Memorial Prize, awarded to a senior majoring in English for the best short story. -- Anna J. Megill, AC '08, "Katamari Damacy"

Mrs. Montagu Prize, awarded for the best essay on a literary subject concerning women. Dianne M. Mitchell, '09, "Struggling to Speak: The Esther Narrator of Bleak House"

Gertrude Posner Spencer Prize, awarded for excellence in writing fiction and non-fiction prose.

Vernon Harward Prize, for the best student scholor of Chaucer. Danielle L. Vazquez, '09
