Patricia L. Skarda earned a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, where she also taught before coming to Smith.

Besides publishing in the Romantic period and co-editing The Evil Image: Two Centuries of Gothic Short Fiction and Poetry (1981) with Nora Crow, Professor Skarda has also published two collections of literature written by Smith alumnae (Smith Voices: Selected Works by Smith College Alumnae).

Professor Skarda has spent two years away from Smith as an American Council on Education Fellow in Academic Administration (1978–79) and as a distinguished visiting professor at the United States Air Force Academy (1992–93).
