Born in Scotland, Senior Lecturer Annie Boutelle holds an M.A. from the University of St. Andrews, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from New York University. She is the author of Thistle and Rose: A Study of Hugh MacDiarmid's Poetry and scholarly and popular articles on wide-ranging topics. Her new books are collections of poems: Becoming Bone is based on the life of 19th-century American poet Celia Thaxter; Nest of Thistles, winner of the Samuel French Morse Poetry Prize, focuses on her Scottish childhood. She teaches many of the writing courses in the Department (such as Crafting Creative Non-Fiction, Reading and Writing Autobiography), and she chairs the Poetry Center Committee at Smith.
