English 295 - Poetry Writing

Eleanor Wilner
Wednesday 7-10 p.m.

The poetry workshop is a practicum in the writing of poetry and the exercise of critical judgment, mainly through class discussion of student poems ..   The course is designed to investigate the uses of the imagination, and to discover ways to invite a power that cannot be commanded.  The workshop will include detailed study of poetic craft--the musical and figural resources of language which enable expression.  Students will be responsible for writing a poem each week, doing revisions in response to criticism, and being prepared to critique the work of their peers.  Poetic models will be provided as guides, along with a handbook and auxiliary material by poets on the practice of the art of poetry.

Students are asked to submit 3-6 poems to Bobbie Kozash in the English Office, 105 Pierce Hall.  Deadline for submissions is January 18, 2005.  Students will be notified of their acceptance before the first class meeting.
