English 295 - Poetry Writing

Henri Cole

T 1:00-2:50

This course is a concentrated workshop in poetry writing for those who wish to improve their craft as poets while broadening their knowledge of English-language poetry.  More than half the class will be devoted to a study of prosody, entailing formal weekly exercises as preparation for later "free-assignments."  Poems by students will be discussed in a "workshop" format with an emphasis on the process of revision.  Students will also be asked to regularly memorize and recite poems.  A final portfolio of original work will be required for completion of the course.  Admission by permission of instructor: by January 20 please submit a writing sample (3-5 pages of poetry) and a cover letter (including major, year, other literature classes taken, favorite poets, etc.) to Bobbie Kozash, 105 Pierce Hall, Smith College, Northampton, MA 01063.
