English 265 The Victorian Novel Margaret Bruzelius MW 2:40-4 This course will explore some of the wide variety of the Victorian novel. We will read historical fictions (Scott's The Bride of Lammermoor; Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities); provincial fictions (Oliphant's Miss Marjoribanks and Eliot's Middlemarch); detective and suspence fictions (Collins' The Moonstone and Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). We will consider questions about the ways in which writers during the Victorian era thought about the past, the role of women, the importance of generic fictions, and claims to realist representation.
