English 290 - Crafting Creative Nonfiction
Ann Boutelle
T 1:00-2:50 p.m.

Much is going on in the world of creative nonfiction, a form which includes the personal essay, the lyrical essay, memoir, nature writing, travel writing, literary journalism, etc.

This course will be run as a workshop, with constant reading, writing, critiquing, and some reading aloud. The aim is to create a writing community where criticism is as welcome as praise.

Texts will include works by such writers as Joan Didion, Annie Dillard, Jamaica Kincaid. Writing assignments may involve structural models.

Students should apply, with a letter about why they would like to be in the course and with a writing sample (e.g. Smith paper, personal essay, opinion piece), at the English Department, Pierce Hall, by Friday, August 31, 2007.  (No fiction or poetry, please.)
