English 120 Ghost Stories
Cornelia Pearsall
MW 1:10-2:30

Close reading and discussion of a range of 19th and 20th century British and American ghost stories, by authors including Sheridan Le Fanu, Emily Brontë, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Henry James, Toni Morrison, A.S. Byatt and others. We shall read traditional ghost stories, of varying lengths, as well as a number of works in which characters may be haunted, but not precisely by an identifiable spectral presence. Part of what will interest us, then, are the many shapes and forms ghosts, and their stories, can take.
