English 120 - Shakespeare and Film
Gillian Kendall
MW 9:00-10:20

This course focuses on the way that filmmakers interpret and, building on previous films, re-interpret Shakespeare.  We will look at the way filmmakers edit, distort, clarify and otherwise grapple with works that originate in the theater.  In so doing, we will view the process of metamorphosing theatre into film and imagery into image.  Works to be studied may include Henry V, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet. Hamlet/King Lear, Macbeth.  A number of films have been made of each of these works, and we will compare and contrast the visions of various directors and screenwriters.  Screening times TBA.
