ENGLISH 290: CRAFTING CREATIVE NONFICTION

Ann Boutelle

Th 3-4:50 p.m.

Much is going on in the world of creative nonfiction, a form which includes the personal essay, the lyrical essay, memoir, nature writing, travel writing, literary journalism, etc.

This course will be run as a workshop, with constant reading, writing, critiquing, and some reading aloud. The aim is to create a writing community where criticism is as welcome as praise.

Texts will include the In Short anthology and works by such writers as Joan Didion, Annie Dillard, Jamaica Kincaid. Writing assignments will frequently involve structural models.

Admission is by permission of the instructor. Students should apply, with a nonfiction writing sample (e.g. Smith paper, personal essay, opinion piece), at the English Department, Pierce Hall, by Thursday, September 1, 2005. (No fiction or poetry, please.)
