English 296: Writing Short Stories
Douglas Bauer M 7:30-9:30 p.m. This course meets weekly to discuss stories written by the class participants. As well, published stories pertinent to particular aspects of fiction writing are frequently discussed. Class members are expected to contribute three works of their own fiction through the course of the semester and to offer each week detailed criticism--both written and oral--of the work of others. There is a strong emphasis on close readings, with an eye to how and why fictional narratives succeed in persuading readers that the world they describe is the world. The deadline for submission of fiction manuscripts will be Tuesday, September 7, 2004 (noon time). |
