Fictions of the Journey Beth Kissileff TTh 9:00-10:20 What does it mean to take a journey? In this course we will read fictions about journeys and explore the changes experienced both to the characters and the places they go. From Robinson Crusoe to Huckleberry Finn to On the Road, we will see that this literature can help us understand the place of journeys in our own lives. We will compare masculine accounts of journeys with feminine ones such as Jane Eyre and To the Lighthouse, as well as question some North American assumptions about an expedition with Jamaica Kincaid's A Small Place. This is a writing intensive course which is structured so that you will learn the skills appropriate to college level writing. |
