English 120 - The Gothic in Literature

What creates fear in a text?  In this course we will read such classic Gothic novels as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights and Bram Stoker's Dracula.  We will examine the role of split personalities and doubled personalities, mirrors and secret desires as themes in these works.  We will also read Jane Austen's satire on Gothic novels, Northanger Abbey and stories by Edgar Allan Poe and Flannery O'Connor.  This is a writing intensive course which is structured so that you will learn the skills appropriate to college level writing.
