English 296 - Writing Short Stories

Th 1:00-2:50 p.m.

Emphasis on reading, understanding and writing fiction.  Criticism of student work by the professor and the class.  Exercises in narrative form, genre, and style; readings in classical and contemporary fiction.  Classes conducted in workshop style with at least 2 conferences per semester.  This is a class for the development of a craft.

Admission to writing courses is by application and accompanied by a cover letter, in which the student explains why she wishes to take the class, and is based chiefly on work submitted by the student.  For application deadlines, please consult the English department web site.
