Transportation Engineer, Private Consulting Firm

Leonora Baddoo

I came to Smith's Picker Engineering Program with a lot of enthusiasm, enthralled by the idea of a multi-disciplinary course which would build bridges between the arts and sciences. Admittedly it took a while to appreciate this approach that incorporated not only the calculated engineering that goes into projects, but the social, ethical, cultural and people skills components as well. Because it was different. It was Smith :-)

Late nights in the "green monster" with snacks a-plenty encouraged bonding in group work, and my professors were very approachable and willing to walk alongside me in my learning process. I remember the day I signed off on my major form with Professor Ellis—that was a great day indeed, the summit of a two-year climb up my academic mountain!

A few years of work experience and an M.Sc. later, I work as a transportation engineer with a private consulting firm in Accra. The liberal arts approach to engineering has given me flexibility in my work to explore a myriad of solutions to a problem; to not be intimidated by position or rank; to look beyond the confines of the plan on paper; to empathise with communities impacted by the project to give them a better quality of life.
