Catherine Swift earned her B.A. in marketing from Temple University and her M.Ed. in elementary education from Smith College. She has been with the Department of Education and Child Study at Smith College since 1997, both teaching and supervising graduate and undergraduate students. Prior to that, Swift taught upper elementary grades in Farmington, Conn., and Wilbraham, Mass. In addition to her work at Smith College, Swift has taught graduate education classes in reading, writing and literature at American International College.
Swift is co-creator of Writers for the World, a writing program designed to promote literacy and social awareness through childrens' original stories and poems. Using direct instruction, mentor texts and differentiated models, young writers learn and explore tools to improve their writing in different genres. Their final published works are shared and distributed to schools and libraries in need of books.
