Elementary Program (Grades 1-6)


Eligible candidates for the elementary educator licensure program must:
Show appropriate progress in the program of study toward elementary educator licensure.
Have successfully completed or are currently enrolled in three Education and Child Study courses,
including EDC 235, Child and Adolescent Growth and Development.
Have earned grades of B- or better in all Education and Child Study courses.
Have a 3.0 grade point average.
Meet with their department advisor to review progress toward elementary licensure.

Student teaching typically involves teaching three mornings each week, for both semesters. In most cases, one semester will be spent at the Smith College Campus School, and the other in a local public elementary school.

This schedule usually operates on either a Monday + Tuesday + Wednesday OR Wednesday + Thursday + Friday basis, from 8am - noon.

Although this cannot be guaranteed, please indiciate a schedule preference below if you have one, along with an explanation for this request.

1. Immediately upon submitting this application, you must send an up-to-date unofficial transcript copy to clearned@smith.edu and cbarbuto@smith.edu

2. Your advisor within the department and the Coordinator of Teacher Education will initially review your application, and your progress towards licensure requirements.

3. You will be asked to attend an interview with members of the department, at which you will also be asked to perform a ten minute mini-lesson, appropriate to the subject area and grade range that you wish to teach.

Summer 2011:
Summer MAT graduate program begins June 28th in partnership with HASBRO, Step-Up, SSEP, Northampton High:

The Smith College Department of Education and Child Study is excited to announce that its 2011-2012 MAT program will launch on June 28th, placing over 20 graduate students in local summer programs, operated by Hasbro Summer Learning Initiatives, Step-Up - a residential Smith College program for middle school girls - Smith Summer Science and Engineering Program, the Northampton Public Schools. We look forward to welcoming our incoming graduate students as they begin their path to teaching licensure.
