Mark Stelzner is a Ph.D. candidate in economics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He earned an M.A. in Global Finance, Trade, and Economic Integration from the University of Denver, Josef Korbel School of International Studies, and a B.A. in physics from Boston University.

Mark has a book coming out this year in which he explores the relationship between politics and economic inequality in the United States from Reconstruction to present. In July, the Review of Keynesian Economics will publish a short version of this project.

Mark is also developing a paper in which he presents new income tax data for New York City and Philadelphia for certain years in the 1860s. Despite limitations, this data offers a glimpse at the income shares of the top 1, 0.1, and 0.01 percent of the population in the two premier US cities during an important period in our economic history - a glimpse previously not possible.
