1. Department of Asian Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Associate Professor/Professor (Tenured). The Department of Asian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications from outstanding scholars for a tenured faculty position at either the associate professor or full professor level in any aspect of the contemporary studies of East Asia. Preference is for an appointment at the senior level.  For the purposes of this search, East Asia is considered to include China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Preference may be given to applicants who can teach content courses about contemporary China. A Ph.D. degree in the social sciences or humanities is required and it is expected that the appointee will have a substantial record of research and publication. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will contribute substantially to the academic and intellectual leadership of the Department. The person hired will be expected to continue to develop research and teaching initiatives relating to their thematic and theoretical interests and East Asia. Experience with developing graduate programs and in graduate-level teaching will be an advantage. The Department of Asian Studies offers a B.A. in Asian Studies. Students majoring in Asian Studies can choose from several concentrations within the major: Interdisciplinary Major in Asian Studies; concentrations in Arab Cultures; Chinese; Japanese; and South Asian Studies. The Department offers language instruction in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi-Urdu, Japanese, Korean, and Persian (see http://www.unc.edu/depts/asia/). The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey invites applications for a tenure-track position in Late Traditional Chinese Literature at the level of assistant professor, begining September 2009. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. or have completed the Ph.D. by the beginning of the appointment. They should be prepared to teach courses in Chinese language, literature, and culture. A commitment to scholarly research and service to the university and the field is expected. Salary is competitive. The position is subject to the availability of funds. The Middlebury Language Schools are pleased to announce the Kathryn Davis
Fellowships for Peace: Investing in the Study of Critical Languages. These
100 fellowships are made possible by a generous gift from Kathryn Davis to
address today's critical need for increased language proficiency in the
United States.

For the third year in a row, the Kathryn Davis Fellowships are being
offered to cover the full cost of one summer of language study at the
Middlebury Language Schoolsfrom the beginner to the graduate levelin six
languages, including Japanese. The fellowship covers the full
comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board), plus a stipend to assist in

SUMMER PROGRAM:

Summer Program on Japanese Visual Culture in Tokyo. For the sixth consecutive year, an exciting six-week Summer Program on Japanese Visual Culture will take place at the Tokyo Campus of Temple University Japan (TUJ), May 18 - June 29, 2009 (tentative dates). This program consists of two coordinated courses: the first focuses on approaches to studying the richness and complexity of visual culture in Japan; the second allows students to develop modest visual projects (digital still, video or web) on selective topics immediately relevant to visual culture. Instruction is in English. All course work will
be supplemented with an active program of cultural events, trips and lectures in and around Tokyo.
Students live in Temple dormitories alongside Japanese students studying English at TUJ. This
