Maki Hubbard earned a bachelor of arts in Japanese art history from Waseda University, Tokyo, and a master of arts in Japanese literature and language as well as a doctorate in Japanese linguistics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Hubbard teaches Japanese language courses at various levels and socio-linguistics courses, such as Japanese Language and Culture, designed for students to critically investigate the historical and social background of the language. Her publications have concentrated on pragmatics and gender issues in the Japanese language, but more recently she is interested in problems in national language policies and language rights.
