Letter from the Dean
Dear Students,
I am so pleased that you have chosen to come to Smith College. As you have surely discovered, Smith is a vibrant community with a wide array of academic and co-curricular opportunities. I know your days here are crammed full of work and other obligations. I do hope you discover the many opportunities for fun and relaxation as well.
As the dean of the college, I have responsibility for all the areas that support student life at Smith, starting with your application for admission. In your years here, you will make use of many of the services and support systems that fall within my jurisdiction, including the offices of the Registrar, Class Deans, Admission, Student Financial Services, Career Development, International Students, International Study, Multicultural Affairs, Student Affairs, Residential Life and Disability Services, as well as the Health and Counseling Services, Religious & Spiritual Life and the Center for Work and Life, where you can find programming on leadership development, work and wellness. The staff in all these departments and offices are here to help you make the most of your time at Smith and to answer your questions, no matter how small; you need only make the effort to initiate contact.
Most deans and directors have walk-in hours when you may drop in without an appointment to chat or seek assistance. You may also call or e-mail any of us to make an appointment to meet. I meet regularly with students who sit on college committees and those involved with the Student Government Association, and I welcome the opportunity to meet you.
I believe you have made a wise decision to attend a women's college, and Smith in particular. I wish you all the best for a successful time here.
Maureen A. Mahoney
Dean of the College and Vice President for Campus Life
