General Requirements

Candidates for admission must be graduates of accredited colleges and universities. While no specific undergraduate major is required, the completion of approximately 20 semester hours in the social, biological, or psychological sciences is normally required. In addition, it is preferred that candidates have at least one year of paid or volunteer experience in human services. Preference in admission will be given to those qualified candidates who have had at least one year of general work experience.

B.S.W. Advanced Standing Requirements

Candidates considering BSW Advanced Standing must have completed a BSW at a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). For more information about the BSW Advanced Standing Program, click here .

Admission Deadlines

The School begins to process applications on April 1 for enrollment into the next academic year, which starts in June of the following year. While the deadline for filing applications is February 21, early application is strongly encouraged; early admission decision and early review of field placement requests will be given to those who submit a complete application on or before January 5 (Early Admission is non-binding). Special requests for filing an application after February 21 should be directed to the Office of Admission.

An applicant whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE); official scores must be sent to the School by February 1.

Applicants should have their transcripts forwarded to the School immediately after applying as applications cannot be reviewed without transcripts on file. The Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Analogies Test score may be submitted in support of the application, but are not required for admission. However, on occasion, the School may request one or the other of these standardized tests as needed.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that their admission material is complete and should make every effort to provide all the information requested in the application.

International Student Applications

Applicants who are citizens of other countries should follow the application procedures outlined. Applicants are encouraged to have some experience in a social work program before attending the School. Applicants with an undergraduate degree in social work or equivalent course work may qualify for advanced standing.

A substantial working knowledge of English is essential for admission. Applicants for whom English is not a first language must take the TOEFL iBT and have an official score report sent to the Office of Admission; a minimum score for the TOEFL iBT is 89. If the TOEFL test is taken on paper or by computer, the TSE, Test of Spoken English is also required with a minimum score of 50. The minimum test scores for the paper based TOEFL is 550; computer generated is 207-233. The TOEFL requirement may be waived by the Admission Committee if English has been the primary language spoken in the home and at school. The School reserves the right to require the TOEFL of any applicant whose first language is not English.

Individual Appointments

If you are interested in an individual appointment to discuss your professional interests with a faculty member or an alumna/us, please call the Office of Admission at (413) 585-7960 or e-mail at sswadm@email.smith.edu. Occasionally, the Committee on Admission may initiate an interview if it feels one would be helpful; otherwise, interviews are not required in the application process.

Notification

Those who submit complete applications by January 5 will be notified of a decision on their application by the first week in February; those submitting complete applications by February 21 will be notified by March 28.
