This Advanced Certificate Program in spirituality and clinical social work practice will consider the clinical relationship as a potential locus of the sacred. It will deepen the clinician's awareness of the sacred dimensions of his/her work by exploring his/her own religious histories and spiritual practices, the clients' spiritual beliefs and practices, and the clinical relationship itself. A framework for assessing religious and spiritual development will be explored and issues of ethics and social justice will be discussed. This program will consist of two extended weekend (Thursday-Sunday) sessions, the first session being held on October 1 - 4, 2009 and the second session on April 8 - 11, 2010. Between the two academic sessions, participants will apply their learning to their current clinical experiences. Students will receive consultation on their endeavors through monthly online chat room case-based discussions. (This program is designed for clinicians with a minimum of three years post-master's clinical experience; a Masters or Ph.D. degree and a license to practice social work are also required. The Certificate in Contemplative Clinical Practice carries 31.5 Continuing Education Credits For detailed information, click here.
Social workers encounter death, dying and bereavement in every setting in which they work but few have been prepared to take leadership in changing the culture in work with the dying and with their families. This program, the first in this country and now in its ninth year, provides social workers relational ways of learning in a community of colleagues, with an outstanding faculty of leaders in the field. Students take advanced coursework over two long weekends, punctuated by a clinical internship where they study two to three study cases intensively using individual telephonic supervision, and telephonic group supervision, and where they are mentored in taking leadership in the field, including in publishing. Supervisors are outstanding practitioners chosen by the program.
The academic content includes: psychodynamic and developmental theories in death and bereavement, childhood bereavement, advanced practice I and II, spirituality I and II, legal and ethical issues, pain and symptom management, hospice and palliative care, work with marginalized populations, work with lesbian and gay persons who are dying, advanced leadership and systems change.
The program is designed for end of life social workers with 2 years of post graduate experience who are currently working with end of life care issues. Dr. Joan Berzoff, Director of the End of Life Care Certificate Program, is on sabbatical in 2008-09 but is available to take applications and questions at jberzoff@email.smith.edu for the incoming class of 2009-2010.
