Neilson Library is the main
library for the Smith campus and for School for Social Work
(SSW) students. The Young Science Library, in Bass Hall,
is also of interest to SSW students, particularly for its
coverage of psychology and medicine. Two other branch libraries,
Hillyer Library and Josten Library, serve the fine arts and
performing arts respectively. The total collections
of these libraries contain over 1,000,000 volumes, 3,100 current
periodical subscriptions, 75 electronic databases, federal
and international documents, and the archives of Smith College
and a Social Work Archive.
The Smith College
Studies in Social Work, a long-standing, juried professional
journal focusing on the dissemination of knowledge relevant
to clinical practice, is housed at Neilson. Articles include
those from scholars, researchers, and practitioners, as well
as those based on theses or dissertations produced by Smith
graduates. The Studies also publishes reviews of
current professional publications and abstracts of all of
the theses and dissertations completed at Smith on an annual
basis.
Through an exchange with the
Five College Consortium, School for Social Work students also
have access to the library holdings at Amherst, Mount Holyoke,
and Hampshire colleges and the University of Massachusetts'
flagship campus in Amherst.
