Sponsored Research is defined
as all research and programs supported by external funding and received by Smith
College on behalf of members of the college community, and for which the college
is accountable. This does not include gifts or bequests to the college, student financial
aid, or support for student projects unless the college is required to submit an
application on a student's behalf and administer the award(s).
Three offices on campus provide primary support
for sponsored research at Smith. They are: The Office of Corporate and Foundation
Relations, the Sponsored Research Office, and Grants Accounting within the Finance
Office.
Q: I am looking for external funding for my
research or program. Whom do I contact?
A: Marilyn Woodman in the Office of Corporate
and Foundation Relations. This office assists faculty in identifying potential funding
sources, both public and private, and, when requested, will review draft grant proposals
and provide substantive editorial guidance. www.smith.edu/future/cfr/resources.php
Q: I am ready to apply for an external grant.
Whom do I contact?
A: There are two contacts as you prepare your proposal.
Marilyn Woodman assists with proposal development and provides editorial guidance.
Emily Robinson in the Sponsored Research Office assists with budget development and
the grant submission process. Her work is overseen by John Davis, Associate Provost,
who serves as the Director of Sponsored Research. Working with Marilyn and Emily
should occur simultaneously since they provide assistance on different aspects of
the proposal process.
All external grant proposals must be reviewed
and approved by the Sponsored Research Office prior to submission. www.smith.edu/deanoffaculty.html
Q: I was just awarded a grant, now what?
A: Contact Danielle Smith in Grants Accounting within
the Finance Office. Grants Accounting provides all aspects of post-award services
from grant fund setup through closeout. Danielle works with principal investigators
and administrative support staff to provide updates on grant funds, financial reporting,
effort reporting, guidance on award terms and conditions, compliance, and oversight.
David DeSwert, Director of Budgets and Grants, oversees Grants Accounting. www.smith.edu/controller/grants.php
