Deadline for tenure track requests (if you are contemplating a tenure track request, please discuss your plans with the Provost/Dean of the Faculty prior to submission).

Regular meetings with chairs and directors will be held as follows. All meetings take place on Wednesdays, 12:00-1:00 pm, in the Conference Center, and include lunch, unless otherwise noted.

Sabbaticals and Leaves without Pay

October 15, 2013

 

The Sabbatical/Leave Without Pay Request Form with appended description of proposed leave project for the academic year 2015-16 due in the Office of the Provost/Dean of the Faculty. This form must be signed by the Chair and/or Director of the Department/Program to indicate departmental approval of request and project before it is returned to the Provost/Dean's Office. Authorization to individual (with copy to Chair) will follow after appropriate review.

According to the Policy of Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure at Smith College (IV.B.1.d.), tenure-track faculty members requesting a one-semester or year sabbatical or leave of absence have the option of counting the semester(s) away as part of the probationary period for the tenure review.

In cases of tenure, the candidate and the Department to provide the Committee on Tenure and Promotion by this date with the names and addresses of outside evaluators to be solicited for comments.

Departments to notify the Committee on Tenure and Promotion of the names of possible candidates for promotion. The department and candidate to send to the Office of the President the names and addresses of outside evaluators to be solicited for comments.

September 3, 2013

 

Candidates being considered for tenure and/or promotion in 2013-2014 to provide two copies of dossier for the Committee on Tenure and Promotion;eight copies of the curriculum vitae; eight copies of the record of teaching form; and eight copies of statement on current scholarship and teaching, and plans for the future. Candidates to provide four copies of dossier, labeled for outside evaluators. Candidates to provide one copy of dossier for department.

All materials to be sent to Hayley Spizz, Secretary to the Committee on Tenure and Promotion (College Hall 206); dossier for Department to be sent by candidate directly to Chair of Department.

Meeting of the Board of Trustees at which recommendations for promotion and tenure will be acted upon. Promotion and tenure to be effective July 1, 2014.

June 1, 2014

 

As a normal procedure, appointment at the rank of Instructor shall not be continued beyond a period of three years. Departments shall be required to recommend either a promotion to Assistant Professor or a one-year terminating appointment by May 1 of the candidate's second year as Instructor, so that notification may reach the candidate by June 1 of that year. Form H1 due in the Office of the Provost/Dean of the Faculty for cases of reappointment and non-reappointment requiring December 15th notification These are a) individuals serving in the second year of an initial two-year full-time appointment or in a second one-year full-time appointment (I.B.2.c.), and b) individuals on a second or subsequent part-time appointment of two or three years (VI.A.3.e.).

December 15, 2013

 

Form H1 due in the Office of the Provost/Dean of the Faculty for cases of reappointment and non-reappointment requiring January 15th notification. These are individuals on an initial one-year full-time appointment. (I.B.2.c.).

Important Dates for the Reappointment of Lecturers Holding Appointment of Half-time or Greater

November 15, 2013

 

Requests due in the Office of the Provost/Dean of the Faculty for the continuation of lecturer positions held by a) Senior Lecturers in the last year of their appointment (VII.B.3.a.1.), b) Lecturers who have served at the college for more than five years at the end of their current appointment and are in the penultimate year of their appointment (VII.A.3.a.1.), and c) all other Lecturers whose appointment ends with the current academic year (VII.A.3.a.1.). If the department does not request the continuation of a lecturer position, authorization for the position and the appointment of the incumbent will lapse at the end of the incumbent's current appointment, except that Senior Lecturers will be given a terminal year. (VII.A.3.a.2. and VII.B.3.a.2.).

Form H4 due in the Office of the Provost/Dean of the Faculty for cases of reappointment and non-reappointment requiring December 15th notification. These are individuals who shall have served five years or fewer at the end of their current appointment and who are in the final year of a two- or three-year appointment (VII.A.3.b.6.b.).

These are individuals who at the end of their current appointment will have served at the college for more than five years and are in the penultimate year of their appointment (VII.A.3.b.6.c.).
