APPENDIX H

Statement of Principle on Sexual Relationships between Faculty and Students

Sexual relationships between faculty members and their students (students they teach, direct in independent study, advise) violate the ethics of the teaching profession and are inconsistent with the mission of the college. Since faculty members are at least potentially in the position of teaching, supervising, evaluating, or advising any student, it is generally inappropriate for faculty members to engage in sexual relationships with students, and particularly with a student concentrating in the faculty member's department or program. Sexual relationships are unacceptable when the faculty member is directly involved in the student's academic program. Faculty members should be cognizant of the fact that sexual relationships with any student carry some risk of damaging the student's educational experience and the faculty member's career.
