THE FACULTY

(a)

 

Composition. The faculty shall consist of the President of the College, the Provost and Dean of the Faculty, the Associate Provost and Dean for Academic Development, the Dean of the College, full professors, associate professors, assistant professors, instructors, senior lecturers, and such lecturers and visitors as shall from time to time be appointed, as well as those administrative officers whose presence the Trustees shall decide to be serviceable to the faculty in its deliberations.

Voting members of the faculty are the President, the Provost and Dean of the Faculty, the Associate Provost and Dean for Academic Development, the Dean of the College, and those full professors, associate professors, assistant professors, instructors, and senior lecturers who are appointed for more than one year or for the second year even though the second-year appointment is for one year only. Lecturers and visitors who are in at least half-time positions and who have served for the equivalent of one year of full-time teaching, and those administrative officers whose presence the Trustees shall decide to be serviceable to the faculty in its deliberations shall also have voting rights. Those members of the faculty who do not meet the above criteria, as well as resident members of the faculty of the School for Social Work are invited to attend the meetings of the faculty but have no vote. (The voting rights of lecturers and visitors appointed before the academic year 2002-2003 shall be governed by the legislation in effect at the time of their appointment).

 
 

(c)

 

A member on leave or sabbatical for a semester or a year is a member of the faculty and may attend and take part in faculty meetings and has the right to speak, to make motions, and to vote. He or she may participate in departmental meetings in accordance with Section IV.B.2b. of the Policy of Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion and Tenure at Smith College.

 
 

(d)

 

Legislative Action. The legislative action of the faculty shall be determined by a majority vote subject to the approval of the President of the College. Should any measure which has been vetoed by the President be passed again by a two-thirds vote, it may be submitted for official decision to the Trustees, who shall serve as a final court of appeal. In case of such an appeal, the faculty shall have the right to have their views laid before the Trustees by a representative or representatives of their own choosing. (By-Laws of the Trustees, Section 6.2)
