Position: Full-time, tenure track assistant professor position
in Dance, starting Fall 2009.
The Smith College Department of Dance and the Five College Dance Department seek
a dance scholar actively engaged in the history, contemporary theory and practice
of dance in the context of western theatrical expression and global traditions. We
seek a PhD involved in scholarly and/or creative research, with interests in issues
of diversity, ethnicity, sexuality and gender, class, and cultural traditions, especially
as these relate to current dialogues in global performance, scholarship and dance
fusion. A key requirement for this position is the ability to discuss dance simultaneously
as corporeal knowledge, cultural language, and performance art. Ideally we seek an
academic dance scholar with a record of publication, who is also engaged in the studio
teaching of a cultural or fusion movement form and/or the development of choreographic
works.
Responsibilities of this position will include:
- Develop upper level course work in her/his own area of specialization and teach
the following courses:
- Dance History in the 20th Century (undergraduate writing intensive course)
- Dance and Culture (undergraduate anthropological study)
- History and Literature of Dance (graduate level course in current research
methods)
- Theory and Practice of Dance (graduate seminar course with rotating topics)
- Criticize, mentor, and evaluate undergraduate and graduate choreography and research/thesis
projects
- Actively participate in the field at large through on-going innovative research
in dance history, theory and practice
- Contribute to ongoing curriculum development, contribute to advising, administration
and governance within the department, college and Five College Dance Department
Qualifications: We seek an academic dance scholar with a strong
record of publication, but would welcome a faculty member who also desires to work
in the studio as a teacher of a cultural/modern fusion movement form and/or as a
choreographer. Previous academic experience with undergraduate and graduate dance
students and experience with academic administrative duties is required as is the
commitment to teach within a Liberal Arts setting. A PhD is preferred; candidates
with MFA’s and substantial professional experience will be considered.
Salary: Commensurate with experience at the entering Assistant
Professor level.
About the Department: The Smith College Department of Dance is
a member of the Five College Dance Department (FCDD), the largest dance program in
New England. The FCDD curriculum emphasizes in-depth study of a broad spectrum of
dance as an art form, including technical, creative, historical, cultural and scientific
dimensions. Students are encouraged to balance performance and creative studies with
a broad understanding of the historical and cultural contexts of different dance
traditions. They may shape their major studies in either traditional or interdisciplinary
ways, reflecting the wide range of career options and new directions of the contemporary
field. The Department offers over 100 courses a year, numerous performing opportunities
and a performing arts calendar equal to a major metropolis. As the nation’s
largest liberal arts college for women, Smith offers a unique breadth of resources.
