The Dance Department
is located in the Mendenhall Center for the Performing Arts.
The Mendenhall Center is home to the department office and two sprung-wood
floored dance studios, as well as the 460-seat Theatre 14,
a gift in honor of the Class of 1914, and the black box Hallie
Flanagan Studio Theatre. The building also houses lighting
and set design labs, lounges, dressing rooms, and professional-level
scene and costume shops. The Mendenhall Center is also home to the Smith College
Theatre Department and the Josten Performing Arts Library.
Additional dance studios are located next door in the Scott
Gymnasium and in the former Crew House on Paradise Pond.
Theatre 14, Smith's main stage, is a proscenium theater with extensive fly and wing spaces. Hallie Flanagan Studio Theatre, a versatile facility named for Hallie Flanagan Davis, director of theatre at Smith from 1942 to 1955 and famed for her innovations in dramatic production, gives performers freedom in set and production design. Students draw on the extensive collection of texts, scripts, scores and recordings housed in Josten Library; Josten holds more than 51,000 recordings and a multitude of diverse scripts, and maintains listening rooms and stations for student use.
A $6.2 million renovation of the Mendenhall Center was completed in 2003. The program included a new and enlarged storage space for theatre costumes and the music collection, and a new classroom was created in the lounge area of the Upper Gamut. The new classroom provides additional teaching space for the theatre and dance departments; the room has modular furniture that can be removed to take advantage of a new "sprung" dance surface, and is equipped with digital audio and visual capabilities. A new elevator provides access to all levels of the main theatre building.
